WordPlay Back to the game

Privacy Policy

Effective 20 September 2026. Applies to the WordPlay web app at wordplay.jlrdev.co.za and to the WordPlay apps published on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

WordPlay does not collect your personal information. Not any of it. There is no account, no sign-in, no advertising, no analytics, no tracking and no third-party code. The game makes no network request to anyone once it has loaded.

Your progress and statistics are saved in your own browser, on your own device, and never sent anywhere. Clearing your browser data or uninstalling the app erases them completely, because we hold no copy.

1. Who is responsible

WordPlay is published by JL Reynders, trading as JLR Dev, Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa. For anything in this policy, including any request about your information, write to jan-louis@jlrdev.co.za.

For the purposes of the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA), the responsible party is JL Reynders, trading as JLR Dev and the Information Officer is JL Reynders, reachable at the same address. Where the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 applies, JL Reynders, trading as JLR Dev would be the controller - though, as set out below, no personal data is processed.

2. What we collect

Nothing. We operate no server that receives your data, no database of players, and no logging of what you type or which words you guess. We cannot identify you, and we cannot link one visit to another.

3. What is stored on your own device

The game keeps a small amount of information in your browser's local storage so that closing the tab does not lose your game. This never leaves your device.

StoredWhyKept until
The puzzle in progress - your guesses so far So a closed tab, a phone call or a flat battery does not lose the day's game You clear it, or the next day's puzzle replaces it
Your statistics - games played, wins, streaks, guess distribution To show the statistics panel You clear it
Your settings - theme, hard mode, high contrast, language, keyboard So the game looks and behaves the way you left it You clear it
Whether you have seen the How-to-play screen So it is not shown every single time You clear it

All of these are stored under keys beginning wordplay:. The game sets no cookies and uses no other storage. To erase everything, clear site data for this site in your browser settings, or uninstall the app.

4. Things we deliberately do not do

5. Sharing your result

If you tap Share after finishing a puzzle, the game hands a block of text to your own device's share sheet or clipboard. You choose whether to send it and to whom. It contains no personal information and does not reveal the answer. We never see it.

6. If you installed WordPlay from an app store

The app itself behaves exactly as described above. However, Google (for Google Play) and Apple (for the App Store) operate those stores, handle any purchase, and collect their own information about downloads and payments under their own policies. They act as independent controllers and we have no access to your payment details. See the Google Privacy Policy and the Apple Privacy Policy.

7. Children

WordPlay is suitable for all ages. Because it collects no personal information from anyone, it collects none from children either. We do not knowingly process the personal information of a child, and there is nothing for a parent to request deletion of. This is also why the game carries no advertising of any kind.

8. International transfers

There are none. No personal information is transmitted anywhere, so none is transferred across a border. The site is served by Cloudflare Pages, which delivers the game's files from a location near you; Cloudflare may process standard network information such as an IP address in order to deliver those files and to protect the service, as any web host must. It does so as our operator, and we do not receive that information or use it to identify you.

9. Your rights

Under POPIA you have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to its processing. Under the GDPR the equivalent rights are access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection. Residents of California and other jurisdictions with comparable laws have similar rights.

In every case the answer is the same and immediate: we hold no personal information about you, so there is nothing to disclose, correct, port or delete on our side. Everything the game has ever stored is on your device and under your control, and you can erase all of it at any moment without asking us. You are welcome to write to jan-louis@jlrdev.co.za to confirm this in writing.

If you are not satisfied, you may complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa) at inforegulator.org.za, or, in the EU or UK, to your national data protection authority.

10. Security

The site is served only over HTTPS with strict transport security. A content security policy prevents any code from outside this site from running, which is what makes an injected advert or tracker impossible rather than merely unwelcome. Since no personal information is transmitted or stored by us, there is no store of player data that could be breached.

11. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the effective date above changes with it, and the previous wording stops applying from that date. If we ever intended to start collecting personal information - we have no plan to - we would say so plainly here and ask before doing it.
