The short version. Play as much as you like. Do not copy the game or its word data, do not pretend it is yours, and do not expect a guarantee that a free word game will never have a bug. Nothing here takes away a consumer right the law gives you.
These terms are between you and JL Reynders, trading as JLR Dev, Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa ("we", "us"). By playing WordPlay, on the web or as an installed app, you agree to them. If you do not, please do not use it.
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use WordPlay for your own private entertainment. On the web this licence is free of charge. In the app stores it is granted on purchase, on the terms of the store you bought it from.
WordPlay - its software, design, artwork, name and compiled word and puzzle data - is owned by JL Reynders, trading as JLR Dev and protected by copyright. Nothing in these terms transfers any ownership to you. Third-party components included in the game remain the property of their authors and are used under their own licences, which are listed at Licences & Attribution and which prevail over these terms for those components.
The web version at wordplay.jlrdev.co.za is free. The Google Play and App Store versions are paid. Those purchases are made with Google or Apple, not with us: their terms govern payment, and refunds are requested from the store you bought it from, under that store's refund policy. We do not process or see your payment details.
WordPlay contains no advertising and no in-app purchases, and we commit that it never will. There is no subscription and nothing to cancel.
We may change, improve or discontinue WordPlay, any language pack or any feature at any time. We may also stop publishing the web version. We will not remove a feature from a paid app out of spite, but we do not promise that any particular feature will exist forever. The daily puzzle depends on your device's clock and on the site being reachable; neither is guaranteed.
Accepted words come from published word lists, and English definitions come from a dictionary published in 1913 and now in the public domain. Some definitions are therefore dated, and a few words you would expect may be absent while others you would not expect are accepted. The Afrikaans pack is marked as a beta and is derived from a spell-checking dictionary rather than a curated word list. None of this is offered as authoritative lexicography, and it is not suitable for settling an argument, a crossword or a Scrabble game.
WordPlay is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranty that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or that any defect will be corrected, and we disclaim all implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, for lost data, lost profits or lost streaks, arising from your use of or inability to use WordPlay. Our total liability to you for all claims is limited to the amount you actually paid for WordPlay in the twelve months before the claim, which for the free web version is nil.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
If you are a consumer, these terms do not affect rights you have that cannot be contracted out of - including under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 in South Africa, and under mandatory consumer law in the EU, the UK or wherever you live. Where such a law conflicts with these terms, that law wins.
You may stop at any time by not playing, and by uninstalling the app. We may suspend or end your licence if you materially breach these terms. Sections 4, 8, 9 and 13 survive the end of this agreement.
WordPlay is an independent game written from scratch. It is not associated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or connected to Wordle, The New York Times Company, or any other word game or its publisher. Any trademark mentioned belongs to its owner and is used only to describe, not to claim a relationship.
These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa, and the courts of South Africa have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory law of your own country, nor of the right to bring proceedings there where that law gives it to you.
If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest continues to apply. Our not enforcing a term is not a waiver of it. These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the whole agreement between us about WordPlay. We may update them; the effective date above will change, and continuing to play after that date means you accept the update.
